Let Our Voices Be Heard!

Christian Lesbians In Europe Telling Their Stories

TitelbildIn this European anthology you will find articles, biographical stories, poems, prayers, paintings, illustrations and photos involving 95 Christian lesbians from 26 European countries. The women live in Austria, Belarus, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ukraine. They represent experiences from different Christian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Protestant, Lutheran, Reformed, Free Church, Jehovah’s Witness and Mormon church settings. The main focus is on living as lesbian and Christian! There are many books which tell the stories of lesbians or of Christians, but not many where this combination is heard. The women tell about their experiences with family, society, church, God, faith, doubt – and our own search for identity and belonging. The stories express despair, happiness, rage, gratitude, and unyielding optimism and trust. Trust in God – not necessarily in the church(es); sometimes quite the opposite. Some have left their churches and some are in the very centre of theirs, sitting in the church pews, taking part in Holy Communion. Some even stand in the pulpit and give the bread and wine. Each one of them has chosen her own way of living with faith and sexuality. One decided that she felt closer to Buddhism, while another chose a «different» and – to many Christian socialised lesbians – unexpected road: conversion to Islam.

The presentation of each of the 26 European countries starts with a country report which gives background information about the situation for lesbians (and gays) within society and churches. As an introduction to the whole you will find an article with thoughts about a lesbian feminist theology, emphasising the importance of telling and listening to biographical stories, and showing that theology is about the lives and faith of the people and their experiences with God. This is also illustrated in two sermons written and given in the Open Church Group for lesbians and gays in Norway.

In this book each woman speaks for herself. The stories are many and diverse and do not all reflect the opinions of the editor, the other co-workers and/or the European Forum. What is important is that this book is a place where the women are allowed to express their thoughts and tell their stories. Thus, the book is neither supposed to be a “neutral” academic study nor a literary masterpiece, but an exciting collection of personal witnesses.

Gay & Lesbian Theologies

Repetitions With Critical Difference

TitelbildGay and lesbian theology has been one of the most distinctive voices to have emerged in Christian theology in the last 30 years. It has placed lesbian and gay experience at the heart of the theological process. Elizabeth Stuart, one of the most prominent theologians in this field, presents a critical survey of gay and lesbian theology. She charts the development of gay and lesbian theology from an early apologetic phase, to a more confident liberationist outlook which owed much to Latin American liberation theology and feminist theology, and finally to its current wrestling with queer theory.

The Word Is Out

Daily Reflections on the Bible for Lesbians and Gay Men

TitelbildThis lively collection of 365 meditations explodes fundamentalist misconceptions of the Bible’s stance on homosexuality and offers inspiration to lesbian and gay Christians. Richly written, evocative, and often surprising, this book reinterprets the Scriptures to offer meditations comprised of a brief Bible selection, insightful words of reflection, and a short prayer/affirmation. (Ingram)

Lesbian Epiphanies

Women Coming Out in Later Life

TitelbildExploring identity development and gender orientation, Lesbian Epiphanies: Women Coming Out in Later Life contains firsthand information about the experiences and difficulties of women who discover and reveal their newfound lesbian sexuality in later life. Psychologists, social workers, counselors, and professors will find that Lesbian Epiphanies is the first book to extensively quote from interviews of lesbians and bisexuals who had entered into heterosexual marriages. From the analysis of these 24 interviews, the psychological, erotic, and social processes of women who come out as lesbians or bisexuals after a heterosexual marriage are clearly explained so you can better assist your clients throughout this coming-out process. Discussing the personal and societal standards which clouded early self-awareness for these women, Lesbian Epiphanies lifts the veil of confusion to clearly illuminate the issues at hand to assist you in understanding and helping your clients. From the case studies in this important book, you will learn how some women came to realize their same gender attractions and the barriers they faced, including negative attitudes toward lesbian women and the lack of strong role models.

Helpful and informative, Lesbian Epiphanies explores the development of sexual identity in women in the United States today and provides you with essential information to help you improve your services to lesbian and bisexual clients by:
– examining how the role of marriage in American culture stifles a woman’s self-awareness of her sexuality in order to help clients avoid the mistake of a heterosexual marriage before husbands and children are involved
– examining reasons behind the lack of valuable sexual information in America that limits a woman’s general awareness of herself, her body, her sexuality, and her life options
– understanding the challenges that lesbians and bisexuals experience when attempting to establish their true identities to assist your clients in overcoming these barriers
– suggesting support groups for clients who are having a difficult time becoming used to the ideas and feelings of some same gender attractions

This insightful book knocks down the sociological and psychological barriers that keep women from realizing or acknowledging their real sexual orientation by dispelling societal and cultural myths about what it means to be a woman in the United States. Offering you invaluable advice on how to help clients effectively and happily live with their new identities, Lesbian Epiphanies provides solutions to the challenges that women experience in establishing their other-than-heterosexual orientation in a heterosexist society.

Coming Out Spiritually: The Next Step

TitelbildComing Out Spiritually is structured by author Christian de la Huerta’s idea that gay people have traditionally assumed 10 spiritual roles or archetypes, and continue to assume them today. These include, among others, «creator of beauty,» «mediator,» «shaman,» and «healer.» This understanding of gay people’s spirituality draws on a number of religious traditions, including Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism, Sufism, and Taoism. After establishing his theoretical understanding of gay spirituality, de la Huerta suggests spiritual practices (ranging from meditation to healing to Sufi dancing) that can help readers achieve greater spiritual integrity. Perhaps the most interesting passages in the book consider how sex itself can express spiritual devotion. «When we learn to reunite sex and Spirit in our lives, we will experience change and healing beyond our wildest dreams,» de la Huerta writes. Coming Out Spiritually describes a mode of spirituality that has previously been explored in the work of Andrew Harvey and Matthew Fox, among others. Christian de la Huerta is equally passionate, and his message–that the coming-out process, when understood in spiritual terms, never ends–is an important one. This book may be a bit confusing to gay people just beginning to come out. (Like Harvey and Fox, de la Huerta sometimes uses jargon that obscures his arguments.) For gay people who have a pretty good sense of who they are, however, Coming Out Spiritually can be an important resource for continuing the process of learning to live honestly with their desires. –Michael Joseph Gross

The Celluloid Closet

Homosexuality in the Movies

TitelbildWhen Vito Russo published the first edition of The Celluloid Closet in 1981, there was little question that it was a groundbreaking book. Today it is still one of the most informative and provocative books written about gay people and popular culture. By examining the images of homosexuality and gender variance in Hollywood films from the 1920s to the present, Russo traced a history not only of how gay men and lesbians had been erased or demonized in movies but in all of American culture as well. Chronicling the depictions of gay people such as the «sissy» roles of Edward Everett Horton and Franklin Pangborn in 1930s comedies or predatory lesbians in 1950s dramas (see Lauren Bacall in Young Man with a Horn and Barbara Stanwyck in Walk on the Wild Side), Russo details how homophobic stereotypes have both reflected and perpetrated the oppression of gay people. In the revised edition, published a year before his death in 1990, Russo added information on the new wave of independent and gay-produced films–The Times of Harvey Milk, Desert Hearts, Buddies–that emerged during the 1980s. –Michael Bronski
