Shore is one of America’s leading Christian writers on the subject of gay people and Christianity. His essays are widely credited with being central to the sea change in Christian thinking that has occurred on this issue in recent years. UNFAIR offers the best of Shore’s writings on homosexuality and Christians/Christianity, along with heart-wrenching but ultimately inspiring letters from gay people telling what it’s like to grow up, and live today, both gay and Christian. The book’s opening essay, „Taking God at His Word: The Bible and Homosexuality,“ is a must-read for anyone seeking clarity on the relationship between the Bible, Christianity, and LGBT people. If you read only one book on this subject, make it this one. (This is the revised and updated edition of Shore’s book, „UNFAIR: Why the ‚Christian‘ View of Gays Doesn’t Work.“)

Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate
As a teenager and young man, Justin Lee felt deeply torn. Nicknamed „God Boy“ by his peers, he knew that he was called to a life in the evangelical Christian ministry. But Lee harbored a secret: He also knew that he was gay. In this groundbreaking book, Lee recalls the events–his coming out to his parents, his experiences with the „ex-gay“ movement, and his in-depth study of the Bible–that led him, eventually, to self-acceptance. But more than just a memoir, TORN provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members–or who struggle with their own sexuality. Convinced that „in a culture that sees gays and Christians as enemies, gay Christians are in a unique position to bring peace,“ Lee demonstrates that people of faith on both sides of the debate can respect, learn from, and love one another.

In their own words, children of different ages talk about how and when they learned of their gay or lesbian parent’s sexual orientation and the effect it has had on them.
„People don’t even seem to try to understand; they just get scared and confused and act out of hate because something is different.“

Believing that the translation of the Bible they use consists of the inerrant word of God, some Christians cite a handful of passages to justify their condemnation of homosexuality. But historical biblical scholarship holds that these believers‘ conception of inerrancy is naively based, for English versions of the originally Hebrew and Greek scriptures are rife with problematic translations. Some scholars further maintain that the supposedly antihomosexual passages are not blanket condemnations of homosexual persons and acts. Indeed, in some cases, these verses aren’t about homosexuality at all; they meant quite different things to those for whom they were first written, peoples whose social conceptions of sexuality were vastly different from ours. Helminiak provides cogent, accessible precis of these revisionist findings on the Bible’s six major passages and few minor references that seem to denounce homosexuality. The Bible does not condemn gay sex as we understand it today, he concludes; those who seek to know outright if gay or lesbian sex is good or evil . . . will have to look elsewhere for an answer. An extremely valuable contribution to popular gay and biblical studies. Ray Olson

Carol Grever and her husband, Jim, were high school sweethearts who married in their early twenties. Thirty years and two children later, Jim announced to his wife that he was homosexual. A fundamentalist Christian, he had been leading a double life for years. In an effort to process her pain and confusion, Carol Grever sought out other heterosexual women, of all ages, ethnicities, and educational backgrounds, who were married to gay men. The stories she uncovered examine these women’s coping strategies and form the basis of this manual for healing.

„must-read book for every lesbian!! The authors have created a gem of a book. Not only is the material hilarious, it’s so true to life! I’ve never come across a book about gay women that really „hits the nail on the head“ like they have. There were several instances when I actually had to put the book down because I had to finish laughing. I’ve recommended this to all of my friends – gay and straight.“

Christian Lesbians In Europe Telling Their Stories
In this European anthology you will find articles, biographical stories, poems, prayers, paintings, illustrations and photos involving 95 Christian lesbians from 26 European countries. The women live in Austria, Belarus, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Ukraine. They represent experiences from different Christian Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Anglican, Protestant, Lutheran, Reformed, Free Church, Jehovah’s Witness and Mormon church settings. The main focus is on living as lesbian and Christian! There are many books which tell the stories of lesbians or of Christians, but not many where this combination is heard. The women tell about their experiences with family, society, church, God, faith, doubt – and our own search for identity and belonging. The stories express despair, happiness, rage, gratitude, and unyielding optimism and trust. Trust in God – not necessarily in the church(es); sometimes quite the opposite. Some have left their churches and some are in the very centre of theirs, sitting in the church pews, taking part in Holy Communion. Some even stand in the pulpit and give the bread and wine. Each one of them has chosen her own way of living with faith and sexuality. One decided that she felt closer to Buddhism, while another chose a „different“ and – to many Christian socialised lesbians – unexpected road: conversion to Islam.
The presentation of each of the 26 European countries starts with a country report which gives background information about the situation for lesbians (and gays) within society and churches. As an introduction to the whole you will find an article with thoughts about a lesbian feminist theology, emphasising the importance of telling and listening to biographical stories, and showing that theology is about the lives and faith of the people and their experiences with God. This is also illustrated in two sermons written and given in the Open Church Group for lesbians and gays in Norway.
In this book each woman speaks for herself. The stories are many and diverse and do not all reflect the opinions of the editor, the other co-workers and/or the European Forum. What is important is that this book is a place where the women are allowed to express their thoughts and tell their stories. Thus, the book is neither supposed to be a “neutral” academic study nor a literary masterpiece, but an exciting collection of personal witnesses.
